St. Peter's Brewery Co Ltd

Brewery

St. Peter’s Brewery is based in a moated medieval Hall at St. Peter South Elmham, near Bungay in Suffolk. The brewery was built in 1996 and is housed in an attractive range of traditional former agricultural buildings adjacent to St. Peter’s Hall. Siting the brewery at St. Peter’s was ideal because of the excellent water quality from the deep bore-hole. Locally malted barley is used, together with quality hops to produce premium bottled ales. St. Peter’s distinctive oval-shaped bottles were specially designed and are a copy of one from Gibbstown, near Philadelphia which dates from c. 1770.

The Pennoyer Centre

Attraction

The history of the inspirational Pennoyer Centre spans the Middle Ages, the Civil War, Victorian England and the 21st century. What was once a spiritual centre has evolved via a complex history of (sometimes dubious) trading, benevolence and schooling into a contemporary facility for business, community and heritage. In 1670 William Pennoyer, a rich Puritan merchant, made an endowment in his will to set up a free elementary school which continued until 1988 when it closed and fell into disrepair. In August 2006 the project featured on the BBC’s ‘Restoration Village’ programme and the following year funding was secured to enable restoration project to get underway.
